How To Make It Your Own
Now that you’ve made the recipe, it’s time to get creative. If you’d like to spice up your fajitas (see what we did there?), here are some simple ways to change this recipe and make different types of fajitas.
Change Up the Protein
One of the first ways to switch up this meal is to swap out the protein. Instead of making them with shrimp, you can make them with chicken or steak strips. Just remember to season everything well with the fajita seasoning.
Consider Adding a Marinade
If you want a juicier fajita, let your protein (typically steak) sit in a marinade before cooking. Mix olive oil, orange juice, lime juice, soy sauce, and brown sugar in a ziplock bag to make the marinade.
Add in some fajita seasoning and mix again until combined. Add the steak, coat it evenly in the marinade, and leave to rest for at least an hour before cooking.
Change Up Your Tortillas
If you’re making grilled shrimp fajitas, another way you can make it your own is to change up which tortillas you use. You can serve them with corn tortillas, which are thicker and typically more expensive, or flour tortillas.
Tenderize Your Steak
If you’re cooking with meat like a skirt steak, you must be careful not to overcook it, or it will go tough. Instead, cook your steak rare to medium rare for the best results and flavor. You can also use a meat mallet to pound the steak to tenderize it.
Make Your Own Seasoning
Another great way to tweak this recipe is to make your own fajita seasoning. You can make a Mexican spice by mixing cumin, smoked paprika, garlic, onion powder, chili powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and ground pepper. Play around with the quantities of each until you find a flavor you love.
Let the Steak Rest
Finally, if you’re making steak fajitas, you must let the meat rest after cooking it. Doing this will make the steak juicier and more tender.
How to Serve Fajitas
You’re in luck if you want extras to serve with your grilled shrimp fajitas. Here are several suggestions of sides you can pair with your dinner tortillas:
- Black beans
- Mexican rice
- Mexican street corn
- Nachos
- Cilantro lime rice
- Corn fritters
- Pico De Gallo
